Somatic Inquiry - Kiloby Inquiries
In the world of somatic therapies there is much explored about the emotions and traumas being stored within the body. The issues are in the tissues they say! The body never lies as it presents to us what is hidden deep. It stands to reason that we must work somatically if we wish to heal from past events; going deeper than our intellect can. It is no surprise then that correlation has been drawn between chronic illness and emotional belief systems and trauma. The Kiloby Inquiries (KI) is a system of tools and inquiry techniques that are designed to work somatically with body sensations, emotions and thoughts. The process was developed by Scott Kiloby, Dan McLintock and the team of facilitators at The Kiloby Center for Recovery in California USA (Addiction Centre).
These tools differ from traditional mindfulness in that they are designed to go deeper, helping to uncover the root of the story or programming that keeps us suffering. With roots in eastern philosophies of Vedanta (non-duality) but applied in a modern context it becomes available to most. The Kiloby Inquiries use a foundation of "natural rest" or presence/awareness and "inquiry" to explore and deconstruct deficiency stories, core beliefs and stored physical and emotional pain by unraveling the ‘velcro’ of thoughts (words and pictures) and body energies (sensations and emotions) that create identification and other limiting or unhealthy, inaccurate perceptions about ourselves, others and our lives often leading us to suffering. .
They can be used on any issue we might have – addiction, anxiety, depression, physical or emotional pain, trauma, eating disorders. This includes unravelling "the Monkey Mind" of excessive thinking, negativity, critical nature, phobias and so much more. The application of this work is far reaching. All of the techniques are somatic based. They require a willingness to get in touch with our subconscious, where many of our fears and traumas live. Support and guidance is provided in a safe, compassionate, non-judgmental, unconditionally loving way. It is not a bypass of our suffering, but a direct looking or awareness, which when done using these techniques, can result in a deep and embodied compassion, a sense of freedom or openness, peace, tranquility for ourselves, others and our life.
A typical KI session is 1 to 1.5hrs and this is conducted by a trained facilitator. Once a person experiences the process they can start to incorporate the principles into their own life by learning to rest with awareness and basic self-inquiry. Working with the facilitator who holds a supportive, safe and non-judgmental space enabling clients can go deeper to the blockages and painful feelings and sensations facilitating an ability to deconstruct, release and heal from past events. . Furthermore, in this instance, there is less chance of a person being re-traumatised as the facilitator is gently guiding and supporting the client whilst remaining mindful of the boundaries of their nervous system. The key to the process is remaining in the present moment through awareness with this guidance.
Ellen is a Certified Facilitator in the Kiloby Inquiries and has been a Support Facilitator on international trainings of other facilitators in training. She runs an informal training support group weekly for trainee and certified facilitators where we continue to deepen and explore the practices.
